Appointment of University Secretary and General Counsel

Dear members of the University community / Boozhoo / Aanii / Kwe kwe,

I am pleased to inform you that the Board of Governors unanimously approved the appointment of Ms. Sara Kunto as University Secretary and General Counsel, following an extensive national recruitment process lead by a committee composed of representatives from the Board of Governors, Senate and the executive team.

Many of you have worked closely with Ms. Kunto since her appointment at Laurentian as Director of Academic Staff Relations in December 2008 and as Acting University Secretary and General Counsel in January 2010.  A member of the Law Society of Upper Canada, she was called to the Ontario Bar after having received her LL.B. from the French Common Law Section at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law and her B.A. (Honours) in Geography and Psychology from Laurentian..  Prior to joining Laurentian she served as the bilingual staff lawyer with the Sudbury Community Legal Clinic and worked as an associate with Bertschi Orth Smith LLP in Ottawa.

I am delighted to see a proud and enthusiastic Laurentian graduate, who was also born and raised in Sudbury, appointed to the executive team.  Laurentian was her university of choice and is now her employer of choice!  Please join me in congratulating Ms. Kunto on her promotion.

The Vice-President, Academic and Provost, Dr. Robert Kerr, will soon make further staffing announcements, including for the position of Director of Academic Staff Relations.

Further information

Dear members of the University community / Boozhoo / Aanii / Kwe kwe,

Media reports in Saturday’s Sudbury Star have raised concerns among some members of the university community.

I have spoken with John Pollesel, Vice President and General Manager, Ontario Operations Vale Inco Ltd. on this matter directly, as well as with Leo Gerard, International President of the United Steel Workers

(USW).

I can assure you there has not been any attempt on Vale Inco’s part to put any pressure on the university on any matter as a result of their financial support of this university.

As stated publicly on Friday, we have already advised Vale Inco that we would not lease space on campus to the company if it’s going to be potentially used to train replacement workers. This position will not change.

Vale Inco and the USW have been strong partners with our university in the past, and I am confident that they will continue to be in the future.
